What it is

What are fat dissolving injections?

Fat dissolving injections use a medication, most commonly based on deoxycholic acid (a substance your body naturally makes to help break down dietary fat), placed directly into a small area of fat with a series of tiny injections.

How it works, in plain language

  • The medication is injected into the targeted fat layer.
  • It disrupts the walls of fat cells in that area.
  • Over the following weeks, your body processes and eliminates the treated fat naturally.

Treatment is best for small, well-defined areas such as under the chin, the jawline, or small pockets on the body.

At least 3 sessions are recommended, spaced several weeks apart, to see results.

About FDA approval: Kybella® (deoxycholic acid) is FDA-approved only to improve the appearance of moderate to severe fat under the chin (submental fat) in adults. Use in other areas is off-label, and compounded fat-dissolving formulas are not FDA-approved. Your provider will tell you exactly which product is used for your treatment.

FAQ

Fat dissolving injection questions

Are fat dissolving injections permanent?

Treated fat cells are eliminated by the body. However, remaining fat cells can still grow if you gain weight, so maintaining a stable weight helps you keep your results.

How many sessions do I need?

At least 3 sessions are recommended, spaced several weeks apart. Your provider will recommend a plan based on the area and your goals.

How long does the swelling last?

Swelling is common and usually most noticeable for a few days to about a week after each session, especially under the chin. Plan important events accordingly.

Are fat dissolving injections FDA-approved?

Kybella® is FDA-approved only for fat under the chin in adults. Treatment of other areas is off-label, and compounded formulas are not FDA-approved. Your provider will explain which product is used for you.

Injections or cryolipolysis: which is better?

Both reduce fat in targeted areas. Injections work well for small, defined areas like under the chin; cryolipolysis treats larger areas without needles. Your provider can help you choose.
